AngloGold Ashanti Ghana has demonstrated its commitment to transformative education and community development by commissioning a state-of-the-art Robotics Centre at the Obuasi Secondary Technical School. The facility, valued at over GHC8.4 million, is a strategic investment under the company’s 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), designed to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in the Obuasi enclave and beyond.
The new centre is equipped with a robotic lab, a general purpose laboratory, an exhibition hall, and an Odium Lab, positioning it as one of the most advanced learning facilities in the Ashanti Region. The project underscores AngloGold Ashanti’s resolve to ensure that Obuasi’s youth are well-prepared for the future of work, driven by innovation and technology.

In her address at the commissioning ceremony, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Obuasi West, Faustilove Appiah Kanin, emphasized the strategic relevance of the facility.
“Education is the bedrock of development, and in today’s rapidly evolving world, science, technology, engineering and mathematics hold the key to unlocking the potential of our youth,” she said. “This robotic centre is not just a building, but a gateway to innovation, creativity, technology, advancement and problem solving.”
“We Are Investing in People, Not Just Ore” – AngloGold Ashanti MD
Speaking with pride and purpose, the Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti Ghana, Mr. Samuel Boakye Pobee, officially commissioned the facility and reflected on its significance.

“Today is more than just the opening of a facility,” he said. “Today marks a powerful step forward in a shared dream — the dream of making Obuasi great again. A dream where our young ones are empowered, not just to survive but to thrive in a world defined by innovation, science and technology.”
Mr. Pobee reaffirmed that the mine’s greatest asset is not the gold beneath the ground, but the people who live above it.
“Through our 10-year socio-economic plan, we are investing not only in ore but in opportunities,” he declared. “This robotics centre is designed to benefit every youth in our host communities. What we see today is what responsible mining looks like.”
“Let This Centre Ignite Your Creativity” – Regional Education Director
The Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Dr. William Amankrah Appiah, lauded AngloGold Ashanti for its visionary contribution to education and called for proper use and maintenance of the facility.
“This facility is not only for the Obuasi Secondary Technical School,” he emphasized. “When Prempeh College, Opoku Ware SHS, and other schools in the region are going for robotics competitions outside the country, we will bring them here for practicals.”
He urged the school authorities to ensure the centre is utilized to its full potential and encouraged them to register their students for robotics examinations within the next three years.

“Let this centre ignite your creativity. This facility must not be left idle or underutilized. We must do practicals.”
Traditional Council Welcomes Initiative
Nana Osei Kwame, Amaneahene of the Edubiase Traditional Council, conveyed the appreciation of traditional authorities for the landmark project.

“We, the chiefs, are happy about this project, and we wish the company well,” he said, extending the gratitude of the local leadership.
