AngloGold Ashanti Donates GH₵732,309.24 to Support Infrastructure at KNUST–Obuasi Campus

AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, through its 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), has donated GH₵732,309.24 to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Obuasi Campus to support infrastructural expansion.

Established in 2019 through a partnership between AngloGold Ashanti Ghana (AGAG), the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, and KNUST, the campus has seen remarkable growth in enrolment, rising from 343 students in its first year to more than 2,600 currently. Projections indicate that student numbers will reach between 8,000 and 10,000 within the next decade, with enrolment expected to double in the coming academic year.

This rapid growth has created an urgent need for additional facilities, including classrooms, laboratories, lecture halls, and staff accommodation. The campus also seeks to enhance its e-learning infrastructure and acquire a bus to transport students to health facilities for practical training.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Lawrence Darkwah, Coordinating Dean of the KNUST Obuasi Campus, expressed gratitude to AngloGold Ashanti for the continued support. He emphasized that the donation will go a long way to expand the school’s infrastructure and strengthen its e-learning system. He further appealed to other stakeholders, private institutions, and companies to assist in providing more classrooms and laboratories, which will prevent the need to send students to other institutions for practical work.

“For AngloGold Ashanti, we mine to advance communities, and education remains one of the key areas we continue to support. This donation is part of our effort to help the university expand its infrastructure and better serve its growing student population,” he said.

The donation forms part of AngloGold Ashanti’s broader vision to “mine to empower people and advance societies.” Through the SEDP, the mine is committed to building resilient, self-sustaining communities beyond mining.
