AngloGold Ashanti Donates Power Generator to Strengthen Obuasi Police Operations

AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Mine has donated a new Caterpillar DE88E0-C-MF generator set to the Obuasi Divisional Command of the Ghana Police Service to strengthen operational resilience and enhance community security.

The donation forms part of the mine’s 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), which focuses on building resilient and self-sustaining communities within the Obuasi Municipality and surrounding districts.

According to the Community Relations Manager of AGA Obuasi mine, Edmond Oduro Agyei, promoting a safe and secure environment is a critical pillar of the development plan, with security seen as foundational to socio-economic growth. The mine has continued to collaborate with state security institutions to enhance public safety across its host communities.

The newly donated generator, an 80kVA Caterpillar model operating on a water-cooled diesel engine, is designed to reduce operational disruptions caused by power outages and ensure uninterrupted police services. The project includes installation works, an automatic transfer switch and the construction of a dedicated generator shed.

Chief Superintendent Kwasi Bohen, Obuasi Divisional Police Commander, expressed gratitude to AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine for the donation, describing the gesture as timely and impactful. He said the generator would significantly enhance the command’s operational efficiency, particularly during power outages, and strengthen the police service’s ability to respond swiftly to security concerns within the municipality. He added that the continued partnership between the police and the mine demonstrates a shared commitment to maintaining peace, stability and public safety in Obuasi.

The total investment for the equipment and installation amounts to GH¢510,141.13.

The company noted that the intervention is expected to improve security response capabilities, support local socio-economic stability and reinforce public-private partnerships aimed at sustaining peace in Obuasi.

The donation follows the construction and handover of a modern Obuasi District Police Headquarters at Bidieem in February 2024, also undertaken by the mine to strengthen the operational capacity of the Ghana Police Service.

AngloGold Ashanti said the generator donation aligns with its broader strategy of integrating security support into long-term community development initiatives rather than treating such interventions as standalone contributions.
