AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Mine has donated more than 12,000 textbooks to public basic schools in Ghana’s Obuasi municipality as part of efforts to improve access to quality education.
The books, approved by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), were presented to the Obuasi East and Obuasi Municipal Education Directorates for distribution to schools. The donation raises the total number of textbooks supplied by the mining company to schools in the area to about 159,000.
The presentation formed part of activities marking the International Day of Education, celebrated annually on January 24. The event was organised in collaboration with the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Acting Community Relations Manager of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Daniel Arthur-Bentum, said the company considers education a key driver of sustainable development and has invested in several initiatives to improve learning outcomes in its host communities.
He highlighted the commissioning of the Obuasi Robotics Centre in July 2025 at a cost of 8.4 million Ghana cedis ($700,000), describing it as a major investment in youth development. The centre provides training in engineering, coding, robotics and problem-solving.
Arthur-Bentum also referenced the Obuasi Community Scholarship Scheme, under which 20 students from local communities received scholarships in November 2025 to pursue engineering-related programmes at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s Obuasi campus.
This year’s International Day of Education was held under the theme “The Power of Youth in Co-Creating Education,”highlighting the role of young people in shaping education systems. Arthur-Bentum said the theme aligns with the company’s youth-focused interventions under its 10-year socio-economic development plan.
Other speakers at the event called for increased youth participation in education policy and planning, stressing that young people play a central role in national development.
The International Day of Education was established by the United Nations in 2018 to draw attention to education’s role in promoting peace, innovation and sustainable development.
