AngloGold Ashanti Ghana assures safety and denies reports of trapped illegal miners

In response to recent media reports suggesting that around 300 illegal miners were trapped underground in one of the mine shafts belonging to AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Mines, the company has issued a statement clarifying the situation. AngloGold Ashanti Ghana’s Obuasi Mine refuted the claims and assured the public that no individuals were confined underground.

According to the statement released by the mine, unauthorized persons are able to exit the underground area on foot through the existing ramp, which remains open. The mine’s management team promptly informed the relevant authorities and public security services, collaborating closely with them to address the situation. In fact, seven illegal miners had already exited through the main access point and were handed over to the Ghana Police Service.

AngloGold Ashanti Ghana emphasized the dangers associated with unauthorized individuals intruding into underground areas and reiterated their commitment to working alongside authorities to ensure that only authorized personnel and contractors have access to these work areas. The company affirmed that the safety and security of their employees and community members are their utmost priority.

AngloGold Ashanti Ghana stands ready to offer any necessary assistance required by the authorities to ensure the safe exit of any unauthorized persons underground. They encourage anyone who is currently underground without authorization to leave through the designated exit points, where public security personnel are available to provide support.

As investigations continue, the company remains dedicated to upholding the highest standards of safety and security in their mining operations.
