AngloGold Ashanti Supports Persons with Disabilities with Assistive Devices to Mark World Disability Day

As part of activities marking this year’s World Disability Day, AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, has reaffirmed its longstanding commitment to inclusion and community wellbeing by donating a range of assistive devices to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in its host communities.

The ceremony brought together representatives from the Obuasi Municipal and Obuasi East District Assemblies, leaders of disability groups, traditional authorities, and scores of beneficiaries. In addition to the donation, AngloGold Ashanti organized on-the-spot free health screening and treatment services for PWDs, ensuring they received essential medical support during the event.

The initiative forms part of the Mine’s broader social development agenda aimed at empowering vulnerable groups and promoting equitable access to opportunities across the Obuasi enclave.

Presenting the items on behalf of the Mine, Daniel Asare, Community Infrastructure Superintendent, who represented the Community Relations Manager, emphasized AngloGold Ashanti’s unwavering commitment to building a more inclusive society—one in which everyone, regardless of physical ability, can participate fully in socio-economic activities.

He noted that the donation aligns with global efforts to remove barriers faced by persons with disabilities while supporting the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 10 on reducing inequalities.

The assistive devices presented included wheelchairs, white canes, crutches, hearing aids, walking frames, and other mobility aids designed to enhance the independence, comfort, and daily functioning of the beneficiaries.

“This support is not just about providing equipment,” Mr. Asare stated. “It is about ensuring dignity, enhancing mobility, and enabling persons with disabilities to pursue their aspirations without unnecessary limitations.”

Receiving the items on behalf of the beneficiaries, Kwame Ankrah, Chairman of the Obuasi East branch of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations, expressed deep appreciation to AngloGold Ashanti for its continuous support. He highlighted that the gesture would significantly improve the mobility, self-reliance, and productivity of individuals who often face social and economic exclusion.

The Obuasi East Municipal Coordinating Director, Richard Blevi, also commended AngloGold Ashanti for its consistent collaboration and unwavering commitment to disability inclusion. He reiterated the Assembly’s determination to implement policies and programmes that enhance the wellbeing and empowerment of PWDs across the municipality.

World Disability Day, celebrated annually on December 3, aims to promote understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and wellbeing of persons with disabilities. This year’s global theme, “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress,” strongly aligns with AngloGold Ashanti’s social investment priorities.

The donation adds to a series of interventions the Obuasi Mine continues to implement in the areas of education, health, skills development, and social protection, reflecting its vision of building resilient, inclusive, and thriving host communities.
