AshantiGold Sporting Club supporters urge Ghana’s President Mahama to honour campaign pledge

Supporters of AshantiGold Sporting Club have appealed to Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama to honour a campaign promise to help restore the Obuasi-based football club.

At a press conference held on Tuesday at Ofori Stadium in Obuasi, members of the AshantiGold Supporting Club said Mr Mahama made the pledge during the 2024 election campaign at Obuasi Black Park, where he addressed football supporters and residents.

The club’s communication director, Thomas Wiredu, told reporters that Mr Mahama, then the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), promised to facilitate the return of AshantiGold SC if elected president.

“Vote for me, and I will bring back your Ashanti Gold SC to you if I become President of Ghana in 2025,” Mr Wiredu quoted Mr Mahama as saying.

Supporters said they backed Mr Mahama in the election based on that assurance but were concerned that no concrete steps had yet been taken to fulfil the pledge.

“We voted in good faith, trusting his words,” Mr Wiredu said. “This press conference is to respectfully remind the President to redeem that trust.”

Ashanti Gold SC, one of Ghana’s most successful football clubs, has strong historical ties to Obuasi, and its absence from the municipality has remained a major concern among supporters.

There was no immediate response from the Presidency to the supporters’ appeal.
