Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Obuasi East Constituency and Deputy NADMO Coordinator, has been confirmed dead following a tragic military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.
The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, and also claimed the lives of several high-ranking government officials, including the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
Other confirmed victims include Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC.
The ill-fated aircraft, identified as a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter, was reportedly en route to Obuasi when it went off radar. Onboard were three military crew members: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah. Their fate is yet to be officially confirmed.
Emergency response teams were quickly dispatched to the crash site. Graphic images and video footage obtained by ObuasiToday.com revealed the charred remains of some of the victims.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who was attending an anti-illegal mining event in the region, reportedly abandoned the program upon hearing the news and rushed to the crash scene.
In a brief statement, the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that efforts were underway to assess the crash site and trace the full wreckage of the helicopter, which lost contact shortly after takeoff. The cause of the crash remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing.
