GES Releases 2025/2026 Academic Calendar for Basic Schools

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially released the 2025/2026 academic calendar for basic schools across the country. The calendar, which applies to Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High Schools, outlines term dates, vacation periods, and key examinations for the academic year.

According to the release from the GES Public Relations Unit, signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations, the new academic year begins on 2nd September 2025.

Breakdown of the 2025/2026 Academic Calendar

First Term (15 Weeks)

Reopening: 2nd September 2025 Closing: 18th December 2025 Vacation: 19th December 2025 – 7th January 2026 Mid-Term Break: 31st October – 3rd November 2025 (2 days)

Second Term (12 Weeks)

Reopening: 8th January 2026 Closing: 1st April 2026 Vacation: 2nd April – 20th April 2026

Third Term (13 Weeks)

Reopening: 21st April 2026 Closing: 23rd July 2026 Vacation: 24th July 2026

BECE 2026 Scheduled for May

The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for Junior High School students will take place from 4th to 11th May 2026. GES is urging all schools, parents, and guardians to take note of the dates and prepare adequately.

GES Reminders and Acknowledgements

GES also reminded stakeholders that all public holidays falling within the academic year should be observed as usual. A two-day mid-term break will continue to be observed each term to allow students and teachers some rest during the academic sessions.

In appreciation of efforts during the just-ended 2024/2025 academic year, GES expressed gratitude to school heads, teachers, parents, students, and all stakeholders for their hard work and dedication. The 2024/2025 academic year officially ends on Thursday, 24th July 2025.
