MCE Calls for Discipline and Unity as Obuasi West Marks 69th Independence Anniversary

The Municipal Chief Executive for Obuasi West Municipality, Faustilove Appiah Kanin, has urged residents to embrace discipline, unity and responsible development as Ghana celebrated its 69th Independence Day anniversary.

Speaking at the celebration in Obuasi, Hon. Kanin said the occasion was not only to remember the nation’s past but also to reflect on the responsibilities needed to build a better future.

She extended birthday wishes to the First Lady, Lordina Mahama, whose birthday falls on March 6, and conveyed greetings from the President, John Dramani Mahama, to residents of the municipality.

The MCE noted that Obuasi has long contributed to Ghana’s development through mining and stressed the need to protect the environment from illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey. She called on residents to support responsible mining and sustainable development initiatives.

Hon. Kanin also encouraged young people to maintain discipline in schools and communities, urging them to emulate the dedication of security personnel and cadets.

The celebration featured a colourful march past by school cadet corps. AGA School Cadet emerged overall winner, followed by Obuasi Junior High School Cadet in second place, while St Augustine’s School Cadet placed third.

A citation was also presented to Isabella Afriyie Kumi, who was recognized as the best student in the Ashanti Region in the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination. She received a GH¢1,000 cash prize donated by Lawrence Nana Obeng Bondah.

Hon. Kanin concluded by urging residents to remain united and committed to national progress, echoing the famous words of Kwame Nkrumah: “Forward ever, backward never.”
