Obuasi: Anyinam Chief and Assemblyman Oppose AngloGold Ashanti’s Proposed School Relocation Site

Traditional leaders and local authorities in Anyinam, a community in Obuasi, have strongly opposed a proposed relocation site for the Anyinam Methodist ‘B’ Basic School, citing safety and land use concerns. The relocation is being proposed by AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) as part of measures to enhance safety near its operational areas.

At a stakeholder meeting held earlier today, the Chief of Anyinam (Odikro), Nana Okyere Amoabeng II, voiced his strong disapproval of the site selected by the mining company. According to the chief, the proposed 5–6-acre land is not only unsuitable for educational infrastructure but has already been designated by the community for a commercial center.

“The land AngloGold Ashanti is proposing has been earmarked by the community for commercial purposes. We cannot allow the relocation of the school there,” Nana Amoabeng stated. “We are not against relocating the school, but we want it done at a site we have already identified as appropriate for such a facility.”

The Assembly Member for Anyinam Electoral Area, Nana Amoako Acheampong, backed the chief’s stance and raised additional concerns over student safety. He noted that although AGA has cited safety concerns—including reported near-miss incidents—at the current school location, the proposed new site presents even greater risks.

“The area they want to relocate the school to is close to a roundabout, which could be dangerous for children. AGA says they are concerned about the current location, but moving the school to an even riskier spot is not the solution,” he said.

The local leadership is urging AngloGold Ashanti to reconsider its decision and engage further with the community to identify a safer and more appropriate location for the school’s relocation.

Both leaders emphasized their commitment to ensuring that the welfare of the schoolchildren remains the top priority.
