Obuasi East Municipal Assembly Deploys Blue Water Guards to Protect Water Bodies

The Obuasi East Municipal Assembly has officially received and deployed the Blue Water Guards to protect rivers, streams, and other water bodies within the municipality, as part of government efforts to curb illegal mining and other activities that threaten Ghana’s water resources.

The deployment marks a significant step in strengthening environmental protection at the local level, particularly in communities affected by illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which has caused severe degradation of water bodies across the country.

Speaking at the welcome and deployment ceremony, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Obuasi East, Hon. William Kofi Adzowu, expressed confidence that the presence of the Blue Water Guards would greatly enhance efforts to safeguard the municipality’s water resources. He noted that the initiative would promote responsible use of water bodies and help preserve these vital natural assets for both present and future generations.

Hon. Adzowu emphasized that protecting water resources is a shared responsibility and called on residents to cooperate fully with the Blue Water Guards in the discharge of their duties. He urged community members to support the initiative by reporting illegal activities along rivers and streams and by refraining from practices that endanger water sources.

The Blue Water Guards programme is a key component of the government’s broader strategy to protect the environment, ensure clean and safe water for communities, and promote sustainable development. Their deployment in Obuasi East is expected to contribute significantly to the fight against environmental degradation and the restoration of affected water bodies within the municipality.
