The Obuasi Municipal Assembly has launched a poultry initiative under Ghana’s Feed Ghana Programme, aimed at supporting small-scale poultry farmers and improving local food production.
The scheme, known as Nkoko Nketekete, is expected to benefit 200 people across the municipality. A total of 10,000 broiler birds have been allocated to Obuasi, with each beneficiary receiving 50 birds to either start or expand a poultry business.
Speaking at a short launch ceremony at the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Faustilove Appiah Kannin, said the distribution of the birds had begun and would be completed within five days.
She stressed that the selection of beneficiaries was conducted without political influence, describing the programme as a government policy designed to benefit citizens regardless of political affiliation.
“This is a non-partisan initiative, and the beneficiaries were selected on that basis,” she said.
Ms Appiah Kannin said the next phase of the programme would introduce layer birds into the municipality, allowing participants to diversify and sustain their poultry enterprises. She added that the initiative would help increase the availability of poultry products and reduce their cost within the municipality.
The MCE urged beneficiaries to take the project seriously and make effective use of the support provided.
“Do not disappoint the government. Make this project a success,” she said.
Ahead of the distribution, beneficiaries took part in a one-day training workshop focused on basic poultry management. Officials from the Municipal Department of Agriculture said agricultural extension officers would be assigned to different zones to provide technical support and monitor the progress of the birds.
The launch event was attended by the Municipal Coordinating Director, Joyce Akosua Angmorteh, the Presiding Member of the Assembly, James Adabour, assembly members, and staff of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly.
