Odeneho Appianin Ennin Eyes NPP First Vice Chair Position in Obuasi West

Odeneho Appianin Ennin has confirmed his intention to contest for the position of First Vice Chairman in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency elections in Obuasi West.

Speaking on Aseda FM’s Ghana Nti morning show hosted by Obarima Kwadwo Gyamfi, Appianin declared his candidacy and revealed that his longtime ally Joseph Bonsu (popularly known as Bonsec) will run for the chairmanship slot. The announcement comes amid the party’s renewed push for unity following its loss in the 2024 general elections.

Appianin, a well-known grassroots mobilizer in the constituency, contested the NPP Constituency Chairmanship position in 2022 but lost to Samuel Dan Yankey, the current chairman. Samuel Dan Yankey got 527 votes whiles Appianin Ennin had 184 votes. He later accused the process of unfairness, including alleged manipulation of the voter register. Disappointed, he broke away along with Bonsec (who also contested the First Vice Chairmanship position and lost) and other aggrieved members, leading to their suspension by the party. Running as an independent candidate in the December 2024 parliamentary race, Appianin polled around 7,000 votes, finishing behind winner Hon. Kwaku Kwarteng (NPP) and NDC’s Faustilove Appiah Kanin who is now the Municipal Chief Executive.

After the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections, the party leadership called for reconciliation, lifting suspensions and inviting all estranged members back into the fold. Appianin responded positively, playing a key role as one of the campaign coordinators for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the January 2026 NPP presidential primaries. Dr. Bawumia emerged victorious against Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, securing the NPP’s 2028 presidential ticket.

Supporting Polling Station Executives

Appianin also announced he will cover outstanding dues and the GH¢10 filing fees for any current polling station executives in Obuasi West who wish to re-contest their positions. Obuasi West has over 700 polling station executives. NPP rules require full payment of dues to qualify for contesting internal positions, a requirement that sometimes deters grassroots activists with limited resources.

Appianin framed the offer as part of his commitment to unity and inclusivity.
