AGA security concerns; Timeline of events in 2016

Saturday, 30th January, 2016 – About 300 to 400 illegal miners breached the fence in the north of the Mine and were driven away by the Military.

Monday, 1st Feb, 2016 – Military informs the Mine that they have been ordered to withdraw.

Tuesday, 2nd February, 2016 – Military withdrawn without explanation

Wednesday, 3rd February 2016 – A mobile lightening system was sent to the site to scare off the illegal miners at night.

Friday, 5th February, 2016 – Illegal miners breached the northern fence and regains a foothold in the mine.

Saturday, 6th February 2016 – A team of AGA management goes to the site to assess the situation together with the police. Stones were pelted by the illegal miners and John Owusu, Corporate Affairs Manager of AGA, was run over by a company vehicle leading to his death.

Monday, 8th February 2016 – Mine releases statement on the death of John Owusu.

Tuesday, 9th February, 2016 – Mine decides to reduce workforce from 345 to 150. Asks workers to go on compulsory leave due to the incident on 6th February.

Monday, 15th February, 2016 – The chief of staff visits the mine.

Tuesday, 15th March, 2016 – The Mine receives a letter dated 11 March, 2016, from the office of the President directing the return of the military.

Thursday, 17th March, 2016 – The military returned. The illegal miners started retreating from the mine’s concession when they heard the military was in town.
Friday, 18th March, 2016 – The military were introduced to the MCE of Obuasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi.

Saturday, 19th March, 2016 – The military started canvasing the concession within and outside the fence.

Later in the day, a top political figure in the country asks the mine to stop the reinstatement of the military to the sites. The Mine refuses.

19-23rd March, 2016: The entire area within the fence were cleared of the illegal miners. Some areas outside the fence were also cleared.

Wednesday, 23rd March, 2016 – The military was instructed to move away from the concession back to their accommodation or residence in Obuasi. The source of the order is still a mystery.

Thursday, 24th March, 2016 – The Military were again instructed to return to the places they have already cleared of the illegal miners. No new areas of the concession should be cleared.

Saturday, 26th March, 2016 – Another order came, instructing the military to station at the entrances of the shafts.

For the sake of records, it must be stated that the shafts are no more in use because there are no workers going underground and these are not the places or route taken by the illegal miners to the underground working areas of the Mine. But these are the places the Military have being manning from that day till now.
