AGA to Stop Funding Ashanti Gold Sporting Club After 2016

The Sustainability Manager for AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi mine, Nana Ampofo –Bekoe has refuted rumor that the Mine has stopped funding the company’s team and former league Champions Ashanti Goldfields Sporting Club.

In a Facebook interview with the Sustainability Manger this afternoon, he said the mine used to support the football club with US$50,000 every month but only reduced it to US$25,000 when the operations of the mine came to a halt.

“AGA hasn’t held any funds from Ashgold. We continue to give Ashgold US$25,000 as we have done since the beginning of 2015. We used to give them US$50,000 but as a result of the restructuring and seizure of production we agreed to reduce funding to US50,000”, he said.

According to him, it has been a ritual ever since but they have communicated to the management since the beginning of the year that they are looking for a third party entity to take over the running of the team since  they can’t continue after 2016 due to their current financial position..

“That’s the position of the mine now. We rely on funding from corporate to run the mine and we can’t spend US$25,000 on Ashgold every month. You should also note that no team in Ghana has regular funding support of 25k dollars every month in this country.
