The Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), under the Ministry of Communication, has been awarded for its excellence in promoting and providing innovative ICT solutions with social impact during the just ended ITU Telecom World Conference 2018.
The award, received by Abraham Kofi Asante, Administrator of the Fund, is in recognition of the organisation’s tripartite partnership model and innovative solution in its Rural Telephony Project, which has seen over 500 unserved and under-served communities being connected to both voice and data services across Ghana.
GIFEC is the only universal access fund to receive this award at the ITU World conference.
Mr. Asante dedicated the award to all staff of GIFEC for their hard work in putting GIFEC on the global ICT stage.
“It is essential for all staff to get on board and continue working diligently to ensure that more success is chalked in the implementation of the universal access service to expand its reach in Ghana”.
The tripartite partnership model brings Government, private investors and the mobile network operators onto a common platform to work together and deliver solutions aimed at extending telecommunications to the unconnected in Ghana. This is the first of its kind in Africa.
Furthermore, Ghana’s Universal Access Fund, GIFEC, was sighted by its counterparts in many countries as a model Universal Access Fund for Africa and beyond, for its numerous innovative projects geared towards bridging the digital divide.
GIFEC is an agency under the Ministry of Communications mandated to facilitate the spread of electronic communications to unserved and under-served communities in Ghana.
