Obuasi Deserves Better Demonstration, a march to call on AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine to employ more Obuasi youth will take place in Obuasi on the 10th of May 2022. The demonstrators will also, in the petition, ask the Mine to release their abandoned mining sites to the various Assemblies and traditional rulers so that they could be used for community Mining.
Speaking to the Convener of the Obuasi Deserves Better Demonstration, Haki Waala, a lot of youth in Obuasi are unemployed and that could destabilize the peace of the Obuasi township so the various assemblies and the Mine must come together and find a solution to that problem. According to him, if AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine employs more people from Obuasi, it could help reduce the unemployment rate in Obuasi.
He again suggested that there are some lands and mine sites that the Mine no more has use for and those lands could serve the town better if they are used for community mining.
The demonstration will see young people from Obuasi East and West come together to submit petitions to the District Chief Executive of Obuasi East, Hon. Faustine Amissah and the Municipal Chief Executive of Obuasi West, Hon. Elijah Adansi Bonnah.
The march will start from Tutuka, where the demonstrators will march to the office of the Obuasi East DCE to submit their petition and then meet their colleagues at Obuasi West at Fegum. They will together march to submit another petition at the office of the MCE at Obuasi West. They will then end with a press conference at Black Park where they will meet the press and put out their demands.
Haki Waala called on everyone who will participate in the demonstration to respect the laws of the state and comport themselves.
