Bismark Bapomo is a worker at the Underground Mining Alliance, UMA – Obuasi mine and also the president of Galaxy foundation Ghana.
Galaxy Foundation Ghana is a Ghanaian based non-profit organization which seeks to bring smiles to the medically hopeless and poor people living in rural Ghana by providing reconstructive plastic and general surgery to the needy. The foundation corrects anomalies and deformities such as cleft lip and palate, post burn contractures, keloids, fused fingers and toes goiter and other swellings for free.
The president, made a donation of GHS5,000 to the foundation as a seed to support the likes of Amponsah Koomson and Sylvester Yankee who at the time of my visit were being processed for surgeries to correct the deformities they have been living with all this while.
Amponsah Koomson had come with a condition we normally refer to as abnormal swelling (Branchial cleft cyst)
- Branchial cleft cyst is a type of birth defect in which a lump develops on one or both sides of a child’s neck or below the collarbone.
- It occurs during embryonic development when tissues in the neck and collarbone, or branchial cleft, don’t develop normally.
- In most cases, a branchial cleft cyst isn’t dangerous, but it may cause skin irritation or infection and, in rare cases, cancer.
- Signs include a dimple, lump, or skin tag on your child’s neck, upper shoulder, or slightly below their collarbone.
Also, little Sylvester Yankee, who was in the company of his father, Joseph Eshun, suffered from palate.
Overview
Cleft lipOpen pop-up dialog box
Cleft lip and cleft palate are openings or splits in the upper lip, the roof of the mouth (palate) or both. Cleft lip and cleft palate result when facial structures that are developing in an unborn baby don’t close completely.
Cleft lip and cleft palate are among the most common birth defects. They most commonly occur as isolated birth defects but are also associated with many inherited genetic conditions or syndromes.
Having a baby born with a cleft can be upsetting, but cleft lip and cleft palate can be corrected. In most babies, a series of surgeries can restore normal function and achieve a more normal appearance with minimal scarring.
