The Member of Parliament for Akrofuom, Hon. Joseph Azumah, has rewarded outstanding Basic Education Certificate Examination candidates from the constituency with a total of GH₵69,000 in cash prizes and 390 exercise books.
The awards were presented under the MP’s BECE Excellence Awards at the Akrofuom District Education Office on 23 September 2026. The initiative was designed to recognize academic achievement while encouraging pupils across the constituency to take their studies seriously.
Stephen Boakye and Stella Boakye, both of Amponyase D/A Junior High School, emerged as the leading candidates after recording an aggregate score of 7. Stephen has gained admission to Adisadel College in Cape Coast, while Stella will attend Anglican Senior High School in Kumasi. Both students are expected to pursue General Science.
Each of the two top performers received GH₵3,000 and 20 exercise books. The remaining 28 candidates among the top 30 received GH₵2,000 and 10 exercise books each.
Seven additional pupils who narrowly missed the top 30 were also recognized. Each received GH₵1,000 and 10 exercise books.
In total, the 30 leading candidates received GH₵62,000 and 320 exercise books, while the seven additional awardees received GH₵7,000 and 70 exercise books. This brought the overall presentation to GH₵69,000 and 390 exercise books.
Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Azumah said teachers responsible for producing high-performing students would also be motivated. He explained that recognizing teachers was important because strong academic results were the product of cooperation among pupils, teachers, parents and school authorities.
The MP, however, expressed disappointment that no student from Akrofuom township, the district capital, was among the award recipients. He challenged schools and pupils in the town to improve their performance and announced that the next edition of the awards would be held outdoors to allow the wider community to participate.
Beyond the awards, Hon. Azumah said 30,000 exercise books had been distributed to pupils across the constituency, while more than 500 students had received school uniforms.
He also disclosed that the District Education Directorate had received three high-specification laptops and five new motorbikes. The equipment is expected to support School Improvement Support Officers in monitoring schools and supervising educational activities across their circuits.
Stella Boakye expressed appreciation for the support and encouraged younger pupils, particularly those living in remote communities, to remain committed to their education and not allow difficult circumstances to determine their future.
“Work hard to reach comparable footing rather than giving up on your current situation,” she urged, according to the event account.
The ceremony brought together the Akrofuom District Chief Executive, Hon. Garriba Mustafa; representatives of the District Assembly; education officials; teachers; parents; pupils and other stakeholders.
