AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has officially broken ground for the construction of a new 1,500-capacity multipurpose assembly hall at New Edubiase Senior High School (SHS), a project valued at GH¢13 million.
The project, which is expected to be completed within 17 months, forms part of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine’s commitment to improving education under its 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP).

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Edmund Oduro Agyei, Director of Sustainability Management at AngloGold Ashanti, explained that the new facility is designed to significantly improve academic and administrative activities at the school.
According to him, the modern infrastructure will include a 1,500-capacity multipurpose assembly hall, a conference room, staff common room, headmaster’s office, asset office, and seven additional offices to support school administration. The project will also include the construction of a new entrance to improve accessibility and enhance the school’s image.
Mr. Oduro Agyei noted that upon completion, the assembly hall will serve as a modern multi-purpose facility for academic, social, and official school activities. It is expected to provide students and staff with a conducive environment for assemblies, examinations, seminars, cultural activities, and other important gatherings.
He added that the investment is expected to enhance teaching and learning while contributing to improved educational infrastructure in the area, in line with AngloGold Ashanti’s broader development agenda for host communities.
The Headmaster of New Edubiase SHS, Christopher Appiah Mensah, expressed excitement about the intervention, describing it as timely and necessary due to the school’s growing population.

According to him, the school has experienced a significant increase in student enrollment over the years but has continued to rely on outdated facilities without corresponding expansion.
“Our student population has increased, but we are still using the same facilities without any upgrade. Our current assembly hall doubles as a dining hall, and one form alone exceeds the capacity of the facility. Anytime we gather students for meetings, some are forced to stand outside,” he explained.
Mr. Appiah Mensah believes the new hall will greatly ease congestion and improve school management, while the new entrance will also help enhance the institution’s overall image and visibility.

The project is expected to transform the learning environment at New Edubiase SHS and strengthen educational delivery in the school, while reaffirming AngloGold Ashanti’s continued investment in sustainable community development through education.
