Wundef Media | July 2026 – The Executive Director of the AGA Health Foundation, Dr. Kwadwo Boahene Atua Anim, has urged women across Ghana to make regular medical check-ups a priority, stressing that early diagnosis of gynaecological conditions can save lives and prevent serious health complications.
Speaking during the Foundation’s ongoing free gynaecological surgery outreach in Obuasi, Dr. Atua Anim explained that many women delay seeking medical attention until their conditions become severe, making treatment more complicated and expensive.
He noted that while conditions such as uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, genital prolapse, and other reproductive health disorders are common, not every diagnosis automatically requires surgery.
Using fibroids as an example, Dr. Atua Anim explained that the impact of the condition differs from one woman to another.
According to him, factors such as the size, number, and location of the fibroids determine whether they will cause symptoms or require surgical intervention.
“Fibroids affect women differently depending on their location and how they impact the body. If they are not causing any health problems, surgery may not be necessary. However, only proper medical examination can determine that,” he explained.
He therefore advised women not to rely on assumptions or self-medication but to visit health facilities for professional assessment whenever they experience unusual symptoms.
Dr. Atua Anim emphasized that routine medical examinations remain one of the most effective ways of detecting reproductive health conditions before they become life-threatening or affect fertility and overall well-being.
His comments come as the AGA Health Foundation, in partnership with AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Ghana (SOGOG), and the Ghana Health Service, provides free gynaecological surgeries for women diagnosed with conditions requiring surgical treatment.
The programme has already screened more than 650 women, with 120 patients scheduled to undergo free surgeries.
Dr. Atua Anim reiterated that the Foundation remains committed to ensuring that every eligible patient receives the necessary treatment, adding that women should never ignore persistent reproductive health symptoms.
He encouraged women to seek professional healthcare early, stressing that timely diagnosis not only improves treatment outcomes but can also preserve fertility, reduce complications, and ultimately save lives.
