Eugene Kofi Amankwaa Says Personal Struggles Inspire His Education Support

Obuasi, Ghana — Wundef Media

Eugene Kofi Amankwaa, an aspiring New Patriotic Party parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East, says his personal experience of hardship while pursuing higher education continues to shape his commitment to helping young people access academic opportunities.

Speaking in an interview with Wundef Media, Amankwaa said completing university was difficult for him and that this experience gave him a lasting appreciation of education and the barriers faced by many students from less privileged backgrounds.

“I struggled a lot as a student, and completing university was not easy, so I do not take education lightly,” he said. “I feel we should always give back to society.”

Amankwaa said public support structures do not always reach people who are financially disadvantaged, making it important for individuals and community leaders to help where they can.

“Government structures do not always support the less privileged, so individuals in the community must also support the less privileged,” he said.

According to Amankwaa, his education-support efforts began after the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. He said he has since supported 69 students to pursue studies abroad at no cost to them, covering requirements including birth certificates, passports and other travel and admission-related expenses.

He described the work as a way of giving young people a chance to pursue their goals without financial constraints becoming an obstacle.

“I am happy to be giving back to society,” he said.

Background

Amankwaa is the Chief Executive Officer of the Eugenmat Group of Companies and has become known in Obuasi for education and community-support initiatives.

In 2024, through Eugenmat Travel and Consult, he provided GH¢10,000 in support to eight brilliant but needy Junior High School graduates from Obuasi East as they prepared to enter senior high school. The initiative followed support for Beatrice Frimpong, who received a US$15,000 scholarship package to study Mining Engineering at the University of Alberta in Canada.

His education interventions have also included support for the 2025 champions of the Aseda FM Science and Maths Quiz, Kwabenakwa M/A JHS. The school’s winning students, their teacher and an education directorate official received a domestic travel and Accra-experience package after the school won the competition.

Beyond education, Amankwaa sponsored a free National Health Insurance Scheme registration exercise that benefited more than 3,000 residents in Obuasi East and surrounding communities in 2025.

As he seeks to represent the NPP in the Obuasi East Constituency, Amankwaa has identified internal roads, youth opportunities, human development and stronger commercial infrastructure as central themes of his proposed development agenda.
