High Taxes, Cost Of Production Affecting SME’s

Increase in taxes on imported goods, coupled with high cost of production is said to be gradually crippling private businesses as well as Small and Medium Scale Enterprises [SME’s] in the country.

This was disclosed by the Director of Elimice Fountain Ghana Ltd., importers and producers of Gemeli Drinking Water, Aishatu Abdul Samed at Gomoa Afransi in the Central Region.

According to her, most businesses are collapsing as a result of increasing in taxes and the introduction of more taxes on imported goods, as well as the high cost of production by Small and Medium Scale Enterprises.

Not only that, she also noted that these causes are contributing to the high rate of unemployment problems in the country, because according to her, majority of employers can no longer afford to pay salaries of the workers because of the high cost of expenditure in production.

She pointed out that to be able to maintain their employees so as not to overburden the already existing unemployment problem facing the country, the government should exempt some of the taxes on materials used for production by SME’s.
