Bekwai Municipal Assembly Members Call for Impeachment of MCE Over Alleged Misconduct and Disrespect.

Bekwai Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region of Ghana is facing a major crisis. Assembly Members have sought to impeach the Bekwai Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Kwaku Kyei Baffour, due to his conduct towards the technocrats, lack of coordination with the assembly members, and disregard for the community’s needs. The assembly members are also concerned about the galamsey activities that are becoming increasingly prevalent in the area.

The Assembly Members have cited several reasons for their call for a ‘Vote Of No Confidence’ against Hon. Kwaku Kyei Baffour. Firstly, they accuse him of showing disrespect towards them. The Assembly Members are elected officials who represent their constituents, and they expect the same level of respect as any other member of the community. Lack of coordination between the MCE and the Assembly Members has further compounded the situation, causing delays in decision-making and implementation of development projects in the municipality.

Furthermore, the Assembly Members allege that Hon. Kwaku Kyei Baffour sold municipal grader and other three vehicles to an unknown person and failed to account for the proceeds from the sale. This has raised serious concerns about the MCE’s financial management skills and transparency in handling municipal assets.

The Assembly Members are also deeply concerned about the rampant galamsey activities in the Bekwai Municipal Assembly. These illegal mining activities pose a significant threat to the environment and the well-being of nearby communities.

The Assembly Members are calling for Hon. Kwaku Kyei Baffour’s impeachment pursuant to section 243 clause 3 of the 1992 Constitution and section 20, clause 4(a) of the Local Government Act 936 of 2016. They urge the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, and the Ministry of the Local Government and Rural Development to give urgent attention to their petition to save the Bekwai Municipal Assembly from collapsing. The Assembly Members believe that this action is necessary to encourage grassroots members of the NPP and win more votes in the upcoming general election in 2024.
