The LEAP school in Obuasi on Saturday observed UN Day of the Girl Child which went by the theme, ‘With Her, A Skilled GirlForce’. The event brought together girls from basic and senior high schools in Obuasi.In attendance also was the Municipal Girl Child Coordinator, Mrs. Hannah Amponsah Agyei.
Speaking at the event, the Director of LEAP Schools, Nana Akua Ohene Adu, reiterated the fact that, women also have the skills to solve societal problems.
“Sometimes some opportunities arise in the absence of men but they are still looked for and given those opportunities totally ignoring the women.” she said.
The program also brought three mentors from various fields including fashion and hairdressing.
Marian Gifty Mensah, a fashion designer, encouraged the young girls to pursue their passion.
“I developed passion for fashion at the senior high school and I pursued it to the tertiary level,” she said.
“Even if you are in the ghetto and you work hard, the whole world will hear of you”, she added.
Marian Gifty Mensah was adjudged the best fashion designer in 2016 in a fashion designing competition organized by Joy TV.
The Obuasi Municipal Girl Child coordinator, Mrs. Hannah Amponsah Agyei, also encouraged the girl to take bold steps in securing their future.
“The girl child is a girl who is focused and knows her goals and will do anything to achieve her goals”, she said.
“Women are 52% of Ghana’s population and it is expected that we should dominate various positions in the country but that isn’t the case”, she narrated.
“The Assembly and GES will support any cause that will improve the welfare of girls in the Municipality”, she concluded.
Nana Akua Ohene Adu promised that more programs to empower the girl child will be organized by her outfit.
The girls were grouped to learn various skills led by the mentors.
