The AGA-Obuasi Mine, on Thursday, cut sod for the construction of a new Maternity block for the Obuasi Government Hospital. The project, which is been funded by AGA Obuasi Community Trust Fund from the US$200,000.00 operational support provided by AGA Obuasi Mine as part of the Redevelopment process of the Mine.
The facility as agreed with the top management of the Hospital will include the following; An operating theatre room, a Delivery room, An Examination room, a Recovery room, and an Anesthetic room.
Other parts of the ground floor will also include, A Sluice room, A Neo-natal intensive care unit, 2-post-natal ward with 8 bed capacity each, Doctor, Matron and Nurses’ office and finally a reception and washrooms.
Speaking to Obuasitoday.com after the sod-cutting, the Snr. Mgr. Sustainability for AGA Obuasi Mine, Mr. Emmanuel Baidoo hopes the completion of the new block will go a long way to reduce Maternal mortality rates in the Obuasi Municipality.
“Obuasi will continue to be our major concern and the completion of this project will go a long way to reduce maternal and neonatal deaths at the hospital; Improving access to maternal health care in the municipality and adjoining districts”, he said.
According to him, the new facility will also improve the level of monitoring by Clinicians of new born babies and mothers after safe delivery and also reduce of cross infection cases due to limitation of space of the existing facility.
The sod-cutting ceremony was also graced by the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Elijah Adansi-Bonah, Kunka Chief and Steering Committee Chairperson, Nana Kwabena Ponkoh, and Dr. David Kusi Amnakwah, Municipal Health Director.
Others were Mr. Francis Darko, Municipal Coordinating Director, Deputy Director of Nursing, Mrs. Jennifer Amankwah and the Site Contractor Mr. Godfred Anokye Bonsu.
