Pay SSNIT contributions through banks, employers urged

By Afedzi Abdullah, GNA
Cape Coast, Sep. 14, GNA – The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) will soon roll out a work portal facility that would allow employers to capture their contribution reports and pay electronically through banks without necessarily visiting the SSNIT office.

The new facility has been successfully piloted with big companies and institutions last year and is about to be rolled out throughout the country.

It is closely linked with the biometric terminal but dedicated to employers unlike the biometric terminal which is solely for workers.

The facility is to ensure that employers and other contributors transacted business with the trust with ease and in comfort.

In this regard, the Central Regional branch of SSNIT has organised a one day employer’s seminar to educate employers and other SSNIT contributors in the Region on how the facility would function.

Addressing participants at the seminar, Mr Alex Appiah, Cape Coast Branch Manager, said the facility would enhance the social security culture as part of its developmental reform processes.

The Trust had partnered the UT Bank and Zenith Bank in rolling out the facility but stated that 15 more banks were willing to get on board with SSNIT to roll out the facility.

He said the idea behind the new facility was to save those in rural areas from travelling long distances just to pay their contributions and added that, with time voluntary contributors would be captured.

Mr Appiah said in spite of several education programmes by SSNIT to companies and institutions, most of them continued to flout the laws on payment of workers contributions.

He said this year alone, 200 companies and organisations operating within the Cape Coast Metropolis have been dragged to court in default of the payment of workers contributions to the Scheme.

He called on workers to muster courage and report their employers of any misconduct to SSNIT for the necessary legal action to be taken against them.
