Ghana boxing legend Azumah Nelson believes the nation can only produce more world title prospects if government invests in amateur boxing.
Ghana has been without a world champion over the last six years and recently failed at the Olympic Games in Rio after the nation’s sole representative Wahid Omar was defeated in the preliminaries by Argentine Alberto Melian.
According to the hall of famer, government’s revival of amateur boxing will boost the nation’s chances of winning a world title in the near future.
“We went to the Olympic Games with one boxer and how he prepared was not the best. But it is bad for Ghana to represent with just one boxer at the games because Ghana is the home of the boxing world.
“The government should therefore invest well in the amateurs so when they turn professionals Ghana will get quality fighters”, he told Starr Sports.
