Residents of Akaporiso and Pomposo in the Obuasi East District of the Ashanti who have over the years been complaining of the deplorable nature of the footbridge bridge linking both communities, can now heave a sigh of relief.
Underground Mining Alliance (UMA), a subcontractor of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has recently cut sod for the construction of the popular Pomposo Footbridge.
The poor state of the bridge poses danger to both drivers and pedestrians, especially school children who use that footbridge frequently.
The mining firm decided to fix the footbridge as part of their corporate social responsibility.
Speaking to the media after a short groundbreaking ceremony at Pomposo, Lawrence Turkson, Project Manager of UMA said their decision to fix the footbridge was influenced by their resolve to uphold safety which is their number one value. ” As a moment firm which priorize safety, we decided to support the community by fixing the footbridge which has a lot of safety implications.
He mentioned that the company remains poised to support community based initiatives as a way of giving back to the community.
He stated that the project would be completed and handed over in 3 months.
Mr. Turkson called for the support of the people of Obuasi for the Obuasi Mine to enable them to continue to give back to the communities in which they operate.
The Chief Executive of the Obuasi East Municipal Assembly Hon. William Adzowu commended UMA for their support towards the development of Obuasi, saying that their decision to construct the footbridge further reinforces such unwavering commitment.
He particularly lauded them for their decision to fix the footbridge, insisting that the private sector’s involvement in decision-making and infrastructural project is what is needed to accelerate the development of the country.
