Water Crisis: Water Manager Apologizes to Residents of Obuasi

The Obuasi Municipal   operations Manager for the Ghana Water Company Limited, Mr. George Apraku has apologized to the residents of Obuasi for the long shortage of water to their homes and business sites which have gone a long way to disrupt businesses and domestic consumption.

Speaking on Shaft Fm’s Adansi mu Nsem segment on their morning show on Friday, he attributed the inability of taps to flow to electricity power problems from the AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, main electricity power point.

“I will first of all apologize to the people of Obuasi for stress they are going through for the past five days without water.”, he stated.

According to him, the Ghana Water Company Limited’s (GWCL) main pumping station at Odaso relies on electricity power from the Obuasi Mine, so any interruption with their electricity, affects the water pump

This is not the first time the mining town is facing acute water shortage. Late 2015, the Municipality was hit by a two weeks water shortage an was also attributed to a fault with the main pumping station.

Major river bodies and streams like Akapori, Pompo, Gyimi, Hweasemo, Nyam and Sanso have been polluted by the operations of illegal small scale miners in and around the Obuasi Municipality
