The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Obuasi after loosing the Parliamentary seat to the New Patriotic Party in 1996 is doing all what they can to reclaim the seats from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
2000 Elections
After Jerry Rawlings’ 28,780 votes (37.37%) in 1996, Prof John Mills in the first round of the 2000 elections reduced the votes by 1,346; giving him 18,434 (26.93%)
The NDC had another 1,328 votes reduction in the 2000 round off; President Mills had 17,106 votes (24.17%)
NOTE: The NPP’s ‘Positive Change’ motto and ‘ase3 h)’ ballot position really worked for them.
The smaller parties rallied behind the NPP to give President Kufour a massive endorsement that saw the Obuasi votes declining.
2004 Elections
Fast forward into the 2004 elections, the Obuasi NDC reclaimed their lost glory and gave President Mills 21,165 votes (28.91%). The NDC added 4,059 votes to the 17,106 in the 2000 election round off.
The NDC again increased President Mills’ votes in the first round with 3,150 votes to the 21, 165 in 2004 bringing them to 24,315 (32.57%).
The second round in 2008 saw the Obuasi NDC adding another 1,928 votes; President then had 26,243 votes (33.53%)
President John Mills came close to Jerry Rawlings’ 28,780 votes in 1996 (37.37%).
2012 Elections
The Obuasi constituency was divided into East and West in 2012.
President John Mahama had 15,673 votes in Obuasi East and 16,072 votes in the Obuasi West constituency.
The total was 31,745 votes; adding 5,502 votes to President Mills’ 26,243 votes.
President Mahama is the first NDC Presidential candidate get votes over 28,000!!
The closet was Jerry Rawlings’ 28,780 in 1996.
Will there be a decline or increase??
