AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine has broken ground on a modern 400-bed girls’ dormitory at T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School in Fomena, at a cost of GH¢17 million.
The two-storey facility replaces the previous dormitory destroyed by fire in February 2025. It will accommodate 200 students per floor in four bays each, with improved supervision, space efficiency and fire safety features.
The building includes 20 water closets and 18 shower bays per floor, self-contained teachers’ quarters, administrative offices with washrooms, ironing rooms and a dedicated power room. Upon completion, it will be fully furnished with bunk beds, sanitary fixtures and electrical fittings for immediate use.
Eric Broni, AGA Obuasi Mine’s Director of Engineering, said the project forms part of the company’s 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP) and aligns with its purpose of empowering people and advancing societies.
Nana Amoanimaa Dede II, the Adansihemaa, who attended the groundbreaking, expressed deep appreciation for the Mine’s responsiveness. She narrated how her repeated appeals to AGA management to support the school had finally borne fruit.
Hon. Charles Kofi Ogbeh, District Chief Executive for Adansi North, praised the scale of the investment but noted its significance in context: “Our Common Fund is not even up to the amount AGA is using to build the dormitory for T.I. Ahmadiyya SHS in Fomena.”
He appealed for similar support to other schools in the district facing accommodation and infrastructure challenges.
The contract has been awarded to Golden Mainland Ghana Ltd, an Obuasi-based company, with completion expected within 12 months.
The new dormitory is expected to improve living conditions for female students, reduce commuting risks and contribute to better academic performance in the host community.
