Farmers Advised to Keep Proper Records for Profitability

Farmers have been advised to keep proper records of their farming activities to enable them to determine whether they are making a profit or not. This was revealed by the Ashanti Regional Assistant Director of Agriculture, Mr. Emmanuel Mensah at the launch of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine’s Community Farming Support Project.

Speaking at the launch, Mr. Mensah emphasized the importance of keeping records of every item received by the 150 beneficiaries, such as fertilizers, insecticides, and the cost of such inputs. He also advised farmers to keep track of the amount paid to laborers or workers employed on their farms.

“Any farmer who does not keep records of his or her expenses on the farm does not know if he is making a profit or not,” he said.

The Farming Support Project, which will be implemented in 20 communities across the Obuasi Municipal and Obuasi East District, aims to facilitate the cultivation of at least 200 acres of maize and 25 acres of vegetables by 100 farming households and 50 women farmers, respectively. The project also aims to enhance the capacity of 150 beneficiary farming households in good agronomic practices and facilitate and enhance market access for their farm produce.

Beneficiaries of the project received various items such as fertilizers, fungicides, maize seeds, and vegetable seeds, including tomatoes, pepper, and garden egg, among others.

Mr. Mensah urged farmers to make good use of the inputs received and keep proper records of their activities to determine their profitability. He also advised farmers to keep in touch with extension officers to inquire about the best time to plant, especially with the unpredictable climate changes.

The Community Farming Support Project by AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, with an investment of over GHc 500,000, aims to provide alternative and diversified livelihoods to enhance the economic status of its host communities while contributing to food security in Obuasi and its environs. The project will partner with the Department of Agriculture of Obuasi Municipal and Obuasi East District Assembly to provide quality inputs, technical support, and market linkage to create and maintain jobs and improve the incomes of the agrarian folks within the communities.
