Galaxy Foundation in partnership with Greater Works Restoration Foundation has successfully conducted a free reconstructive surgery for 96 people. The people were selected after a screening exercise last month at the AngloGold Ashanti Health Foundation. 120 people were screened and 96 were selected. Those not selected had their swellings from the bone and needed orthopedic surgery. Those selected were suffering from either acquired or congenital anomalies such as multiple cervical lymph nodes, neurofibroma, keloids, post-burn contracture, haemangioma and lipoma. Out of the 96, eleven patients only needed injections for their conditions but the rest were operated upon. Most of the patients were from Obuasi and its surrounding towns.
Speaking to the Executive Director of Galaxy Foundation, Mr. David Hagan, he stressed that the least amount the patients would have paid for the surgeries would have been GHc300 but the foundation with its partners have absorbed that cost.
Greater Works Restoration Foundation (GWRF), a non governmental organisation headquartered in Kumasi provided a team of surgeons to support the initiative. They were also in charge of fund raisings and donations for the successful implementation of the project.
“GWRF seeks to restore the sense of self; worth, dignity, confidence back to where it once existed and has been lost to acquired deformities from traumatic experiences such as burn injuries, assaults, road traffic accidents, gun shots etc.”, according to their website. Last year, Gold Fields Ghana Limited (GFGL) partnered with the Greater Works Restoration Foundation (GWRF) to provide free reconstructive surgery for 74 individuals in the Ashanti Region. They have also performed similar operations in the Upper East region. Speaking to Jephthah Oppong Owusu, the Operations Manager of the Organisation, he revealed that his organisation joined forces with Graft Foundation and Galaxy Foundation to undertake similar mission at Dunkwa last year and that partnership triggered this one.
The patients who were operated upon last two weeks from 20th – 27th August, 2017 were again at the Anglogold Ashanti Health Foundation on Wednesday for review.
AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Newman College of Nursing and AngloGold Ashanti Health Foundation are the main sponsors of the health initiative.
