The Obuasi Municipal Assembly has announced firm measures to ensure the full revival and operationalization of the Kunka Market by the end of 2025. Once completed, the market will become the second-largest in the municipality after the Obuasi Central Market.
Authorities say the reopening will not only decongest hawkers from the Kunka Junction but also ease traffic, improve business activities, and enhance the overall outlook of Obuasi, especially since Kunka serves as a key gateway to the township from Kumasi and Dunkwa-On-Offin.
At a meeting of the Development Planning Sub-Committee held at the Assembly’s Conference Room yesterday, members outlined strategic interventions to address challenges that have hindered the market’s utilization. Among the proposed measures were:
- Improving the deplorable roads leading to and exiting the market.
- Ridding the area of drug addicts and peddlers to enhance security.
- Allocating terminals for tricycle (pragya) operators.
- Activating bus terminals to streamline transport activities.
Speaking after the meeting, the Municipal Planning Officer, Mr. Prince Owusu Agyemang Esq., revealed that the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Faustilove Appiah Kannin, is determined to see the market operating at full capacity before Christmas.
He explained that the Assembly has drawn up short, medium, and long-term plans to restore the Kunka Market to its intended purpose. “One of the key reasons for reviving the Kunka Market is to decongest the central business district of Obuasi and clear hawkers from the roads, while also serving the larger population from Kunka to Kyekyewere,” he emphasized.
The Sub-Committee also reviewed the proposed Action Plan for 2026, which will, once adopted by the General Assembly in October, serve as the blueprint for the Assembly’s programmes and projects for the coming year.
