The Member of Parliament for Obuasi West Constituency, Kwaku Kwarteng, has expressed deep sorrow over the violent confrontation between small-scale miners and military personnel in Obuasi, which resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. In a statement released last night, the MP extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and called for a thorough investigation into the incident.
Hon. Kwarteng revealed that he has personally engaged with both the Divisional and Municipal Police Commands, who have assured him that investigations are currently underway to establish the circumstances leading to the tragic events. He also expressed confidence that the Military Command is conducting its own internal review to uncover the sequence of events and actions taken during the encounter.
“It is my expectation that our security agencies will present their findings to His Excellency the President, John Dramani Mahama,” the MP stated. He urged the government to expedite the investigations and ensure that justice is served to bring closure to the affected families and the entire community.

In light of the incident, Hon. Kwarteng reassured residents of Obuasi that the authorities are working diligently to restore calm and prevent any further occurrences of such unfortunate incidents. He further called for peace and cooperation from all stakeholders while investigations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, the heightened security presence in Obuasi continues, particularly in residential areas housing AngloGold Ashanti workers. Schools in the municipality have also been closed as a precautionary measure. The MP urged all parties to remain calm and allow the due process of law to take its course.
