President Orders Investigation into Obuasi Mine Clash That Left 9 Dead

In response to the tragic clash between illegal miners and soldiers at the AngloGold Ashanti mine in Obuasi, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals, President John Dramani Mahama has directed an immediate investigation into the incident.

A statement released by the Presidency on Sunday, January 19, 2025, expressed deep regret over the loss of lives and called for swift measures to uncover the circumstances surrounding the violent encounter. The President emphasized the need to ensure accountability, stating that any individuals found to have acted unlawfully would face justice.

As part of the Government’s response, the management of AngloGold Ashanti has been instructed to fully bear the medical expenses of the injured and facilitate the burial arrangements for those who lost their lives. Additionally, the security agencies have been tasked with restoring peace in the area and implementing measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

While the Ghana Armed Forces have claimed that the illegal miners were armed and opened fire first, many stakeholders are urging a deeper examination of the events leading to the fatalities.
