The Obuasi East Municipal Assembly has mobilised GH¢2,913,528.46 in internally generated revenue, representing 87 per cent of its approved target for the reporting period.
The figure was disclosed by the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. William Kofi Adzowu, in his sessional address during the Third Ordinary Meeting of the Third Session of the Third Assembly, held at the Old Court Building in Wawasi.
According to the address, the Assembly had set an internal revenue target of GH¢3,348,883.29. The reported collection leaves the Assembly with about GH¢435,354.83 to raise to meet the target.
Hon. Adzowu commended the Assembly Members and revenue mobilisation teams for their contribution to the performance. He said management would continue working to improve collections and support the development needs of residents.
The Assembly plans to strengthen revenue collection from approved sources, including property rates, market tolls, licences, permits, fees and other lawful charges.
It also intends to improve the identification and registration of ratepayers, update revenue records, train revenue collectors and intensify monitoring of collection activities.
The MCE said the Assembly would engage businesses, property owners, traders and other ratepayers to explain their obligations and encourage the prompt payment of approved charges.
He also warned that the Assembly would not tolerate unauthorised collection or the diversion of public revenue. All payments, he said, must be properly receipted and paid into the appropriate accounts.
Hon. Adzowu said improved revenue mobilisation must be matched by better service delivery. He noted that residents are more likely to support the payment of approved charges when they see their contributions reflected in sanitation, roads, markets, streetlights and other municipal projects.
