With an aim of ensuring effective administrative system at the local level and drawing the citizenry closer to government, the government has created 44 new municipalities and districts and Obuasi has had its share. Obuasi is officially made up of a municipality and a district: the Obuasi West Municipal Assembly and the Obuasi East District Assembly. The inauguration took place at the St. Philips School park at Tutuka and the President was represented by the Deputy Food and Agric Minister, Hon. George Oduro.

The new district has already received its first and female Coordinating Director and work is to resume as soon as possible. The new district has been given three residential apartments by Anglogold Ashanti to be used as their temporal offices. The offices are located at Wawasi, behind the St. Joseph R/C School.
Tutuka is the capital of the new Obuasi East district and it is expected to have its District Chief Executive very soon.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Deputy Agric Minister cautioned the new district to accept anybody the President appoints as the District Chief Executive. He revealed that the court cases filed by some members of the NPP relating to the appointment of some people as DCE has become a concern for the President and the party.
