Obuasi East Municipal Assembly Supports PWDs in Sustainable Economic Activities

As part of governments efforts to empower Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and ensure the effective utilization of the Disability Common Fund, the Obuasi East Municipal Assembly has disbursed a total amount of One Hundred and Forty-Four Thousand, Two Hundred and Eighteen Ghana Cedis Seven Pesewas (GH¢144,218.07) to Persons with Disabilities to empower them in sustainable income-generating activities.

The presentation was made during a brief ceremony held on Wednesday, 14th January 2026, at the Obuasi East Municipal Assembly. The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. William Kofi Adzowu, presented various items to the beneficiaries, including deep freezers, sewing machines, used clothing bales, cocoa spraying machines, welding machines, disposable takeaway packs, foodstuffs (bags of maize, millet, rice, cooking oil, smoked fish), agrochemicals, among others for resell. In addition to the equipment and materials, the Assembly also paid school fees and medical bills for some beneficiaries as part of the support package.

The items provided were based on a needs assessment conducted by the Municipal Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, following formal requests submitted by the beneficiaries. 

The Government of Ghana introduced the Disability Common Fund to provide financial and material support to Persons with Disabilities, with the aim of enhancing their participation in socio-economic activities and improving their livelihoods.

In his address, Hon. William Kofi Adzowu explained that the support was drawn from the District Assembly Common Fund allocation for Persons with Disabilities. He emphasized that the selection process was transparent and strictly adhered to established guidelines, ensuring fairness in the selection of beneficiaries from the numerous applications received.

The MCE encouraged beneficiaries to use the items for their intended purposes to improve their businesses and overall standard of living. He further assured applicants who were unable to benefit from the current tranche that the Assembly would make provisions for them in subsequent disbursements.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Madam Esther Ayamba expressed profound gratitude to the Obuasi East Municipal Assembly and the Government of Ghana for their continued support and pledged that beneficiary would make judicious use of the items received to improve their livelihoods.
