C/R: Residents blame Melcom fence wall for flooding in Nten Anafo

The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly has given retail store Melcom Ghana Limited up to Monday October 15, to report back over an impasse between the retail store and residents  of Nten Anafo market area in Cape Coast.

The eesidents have accused Melcom Ghana Limited of erecting a wall which according to them was the cause of last Thursday’s flooding in the area.

In an interview with Citi News, Richmond Yeboah, the Public Relations Officer of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly indicated that on the morning of Friday, October 12, the residents and some youth group blocked the main road leading to the commercial street as a way of expressing their displeasure over a wall erected by Melcom Ghana Limited.

He however explained that they organised a meeting between Melcom Ghana Limited, some key residents of the area as well as the District Police Commander for Kotokraba, DSP Earnest Fosu, to deliberate on the matter and they came to a conclusion that although the wall may have contributed to the flooding, it was not the only contributing factor, adding that choked gutters, and bad drainage systems were key contributors.

He again added that they would be working together with other stakeholders like the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to desilt some key drainage on the Nten Anafo Market area to make way for free flow of water.

The Public Relations Officer also advised Melcom Ghana Limited to consider using galvanized pipes to wall their facility adding that it would allow for free flow of rain water.

According to him, Melcom Ghana Limited have been given till Monday, October 15, 2018 to hold discussions with their headquarters in Accra to bring a lasting solution to the matter.
