AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine Matriculates 3rd Cohort of Artisans Under Skills Development and Certification Programme

AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering the local workforce through skills training and certification as it officially matriculated the third cohort of artisans under its flagship Skills Development and Certification Programme (SDCP).

The event, held in Obuasi, brought together traditional leaders, municipal assembly representatives, government officials, the clergy, and the media, alongside 100 newly enrolled artisans who were selected from over 350 applicants.

Speaking at the ceremony, Eric Broni, Senior Manager – Engineering at AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, emphasized the company’s vision of using mining as a tool to empower people and advance societies. He described the initiative, also known as the Artisan Apprenticeship to Entrepreneurs Initiative, as a vital platform for equipping artisans with technical and vocational skills certification to enhance their employability and competitiveness.

“Our purpose is simple and clear: to empower people and advance societies. By strengthening the skills of artisans in Obuasi, we not only foster personal growth but also build stronger and more resilient communities,” he noted.

Addressing Skills Gaps and Enhancing Safety

The programme, which is anchored on the company’s 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), was designed following a comprehensive skills gap analysis. Findings showed that while Obuasi is home to many skilled artisans—including electricians, auto mechanics, plumbers, welders, and metal fabricators—most lacked the formal certifications required to compete for contracts and expand their businesses.

Mr. Broni explained that this lack of certification often constrains artisans’ earning potential and exposes communities to safety risks due to unregulated practices. The six-month training therefore provides artisans with recognized certifications in partnership with the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) and the Energy Commission, ensuring they meet regulatory standards and deliver quality services.

Inspiring Success Stories

The ceremony highlighted inspiring success stories from past participants.

  • Emmanuel Owusu, CEO of Horse Electricals, upgraded his general electrical skills through the programme, became certified, and now runs a thriving business with about 20 employees.
  • Michael Atuobi Boateng, Managing Director of MEP Electrical, also benefitted from the programme and now employs several people while serving a wide customer base.

“These stories demonstrate the transformative power of the SDCP, and we are confident that the third cohort will follow in their footsteps,” Mr. Broni said.

Building a Skilled Workforce for the Future

The 2025 intake will see artisans trained in welding and fabrication, general electricals, auto electricals, electronics, auto mechanics, and plumbing. Out of 350 applicants, 100 were carefully selected through a rigorous process to participate in the six-month training programme.

Mr. Broni encouraged the newly matriculated artisans to remain committed and dedicated to the training, stressing that their success is vital to the growth of the local economy.

“Your hard work and dedication are the backbone of our community. It is essential that we equip each of you with the skills and certifications to succeed, as you play a vital role in Obuasi’s development,” he added.

Community Partnership and Support

The ceremony also paid tribute to traditional leaders, assembly members, government institutions, and partner organizations for their support and collaboration. Mr. Broni expressed appreciation for their role in ensuring the success of AngloGold Ashanti’s socio-economic interventions.

The matriculation marks another milestone in AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine’s commitment to creating sustainable opportunities, improving livelihoods, and building a resilient local economy beyond mining.
