Mavis Nana Yaa Kyei, the Social Development and Gender Superintendent of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, took home the coveted SSI Women Empowerment Leadership Award at the 2024 Sustainability and Social Investment (SSI) awards, held at Movenpick Ambassador hotel in Accra, on Friday 15 November 2024.
Ms. Kyei, who in 2023, was awarded the SSI Rising Star of the year, was again recognized for her exceptional contributions, impact, and leadership towards women empowerment.
The SSI Women Empowerment leadership award celebrates women leaders and entrepreneurs and supports women in advancing their careers. The awards also provide a community for women to share their stories and inspire the next generation of leaders.
Organized by Ianmatsun Global Services, the 2024 edition was themed “Climate action now: Accelerating decarbonization and building resilience”. It brought together industry players who are leading the charge for sustainable and socially responsible practices within their communities.
Speaking to the media after receiving her award, Ms. Kyei said it was an honor for her to be recognized for her contributions towards women empowerment.
She said it represents not just her own efforts, but the collective vision and dedication of the amazing team she works with at AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine.
“I’m especially grateful to the management team for their unwavering support and belief in my role, as well as the opportunities they’ve provided for me to grow and make an impact”, she added.
The Social Development and Gender Superintendent at AngloGold Ashanti said the award was a testament to the power of collaboration, inclusive leadership, and shared commitment to sustainability and gender equity at AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine.
On a personal level, she underscored the importance of consistency, stressing that she will continue to work hard to create meaningful change, both within AngloGold Ashanti and in the Mine’s host communities.
Mavis Nana Yaa Kyei has led several women empowerment programs in Obuasi. These include The End Period Poverty Program, which among other things spearheads the distribution of sanitary pads in schools and trains Girl-Child School Coordinators on Adolescent Reproductive Health; the Girls in Science Mentorship Program, which is jointly run with the Women in Engineering Obuasi Chapter, and the Women Empowerment and Livelihood Enhancement Program, which facilitates training and skills development schemes for women, among others.
