The Centre for Public Interest Law (CEPIL) has organized a stakeholder meeting with the people of Binsere and AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) to discuss issues related to land compensation, environmental protection, and human rights in mining communities. The event, held on September 29, 2025, at Mawuli Hotel in Obuasi, also marked the official launch of the Twi Guide on Land Compensation Laws and the introduction of CEPIL’s legal support initiatives for victims of human and environmental rights violations.
The meeting served as a platform for residents of Binsere to raise long-standing concerns about the effects of mining operations on their livelihoods. Key issues highlighted by the community included the lack of potable water, inadequate infrastructure, environmental and health challenges, youth unemployment, limited participation of Project-Affected Persons (PAPs) in decision-making, and issues with electricity supply and billing.
In outlining possible solutions, community members called for the provision of clean drinking water, free medical care, employment and skills training opportunities for the youth, involvement of PAPs in governance processes, and relief from electricity bills. They appealed to CEPIL to continue advocating on their behalf to ensure that their concerns are addressed.
Speaking at the event, Lawyer Alhassan Iddrisu of CEPIL educated participants on access to justice and the importance of equality before the law, urging them to follow due process in resolving disputes to promote peace and harmony. He also explained alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms such as negotiation, mediation, and arbitration as effective tools for resolving community grievances.
Mr. Richard Elimah, a Researcher and Natural Resource Governance Analyst presented an infographic guide on land compensation laws, detailing how mining activities have contributed to community development in some areas while causing adverse effects in others. He emphasized the need for fair compensation and stronger collaboration between mining companies and affected communities.
Representing AngloGold Ashanti, Mr. Samuel Ennin assured the community that the company remains committed to addressing their concerns, particularly those of residents living near the dam area. He reaffirmed AGA’s dedication to sustainable mining practices and community development.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment from CEPIL, AngloGold Ashanti, and the people of Binsere to work together to promote fairness, accountability, and environmental sustainability in mining operations while safeguarding the welfare of affected residents.
