Court Injunction Halts GNAT National Officers’ Elections Scheduled for January 7

The National Officers’ Elections of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), slated for January 7, 2026, have been suspended following a court injunction secured by a presidential aspirant, Mr. Charles Kwabena Amponsah.

Mr. Amponsah, a teacher at Asare Bediako Senior High School and a candidate for the GNAT National Presidency, initiated legal action challenging the integrity of the electoral process. He cited alleged constitutional breaches, electoral irregularities, and concerns over the credibility of the delegates’ register intended for use in the elections.

According to the plaintiff, the regional leadership structure of GNAT is flawed, having emerged from processes that allegedly contravene the Association’s Constitution. He specifically referenced the 2025 Adansi West District Conference and other district conferences, which he claims were conducted in violation of constitutional provisions governing the election of delegates to regional and national conferences.

Mr. Amponsah further alleged that delegates who participated in the Ashanti Regional Conference and those expected to attend the National Conference were not duly elected by their respective district conferences. Instead, he claimed they were handpicked by regional executives, a process he alleged was led by the Ashanti Regional Chairman, Mr. Prosper Tachie—also a presidential aspirant—thereby creating an uneven playing field.

The suit also raised concerns about the conduct of the GNAT Elections Committee, with allegations of procedural lapses that could undermine the transparency, credibility, and fairness of the electoral process.

Based on these claims, Mr. Amponsah petitioned the court for an interlocutory injunction to restrain GNAT from proceeding with the elections until the substantive issues are determined. The court granted the application, effectively halting the January 7 polls, and adjourned the case to January 15, 2026, for further hearing.

Court records indicate that the processes were served on GNAT on December 29, 2025, through Mr. Simon Naaqer of the Registry at the Association’s National Headquarters. However, the other defendants—including the National President, Rev. Isaac Owusu; General Secretary, Mr. Thomas Musah; and Chairman of the Elections Committee, Mr. Mahmoud Issah Zakary—were yet to be served at the time due to their absence from the office.
