The Senior Manager Sustainability of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Mr. Emmanuel Baidoo has given reasons behind the Mine’s 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan.
Speaking to the media at the official launch of the AngloGold Ashanti Ghana Ltd.’s 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP) on Thursday, July 7th, 2022 at the AngloGold Ashanti School in Obuasi, Mr. Baidoo stated that
‘‘Every cooperate institution has its own social responsibilities and AngloGold Ashanti is no exception. What we are doing is one of them. And that is why there are a lot of interventions in the SEDP.’’
‘‘The main purpose for this Plan is to help grow and sustain the Obuasi economy for so long a time, that even without the mine, Obuasi will survive,’’ he said.
‘‘Before we can reach that goal, there are a lot of things we need to do. The first is to support the two Assemblies by investing in social development in the areas of health, education, infrastructure, water, sanitation and hygiene,’’ he added.
Mr. Baidoo continued that, AGA can not employ all the youth in Obuasi. So the second thing is to help diversify the economy of Obuasi and not burden AngloGold so much but individuals engaged in any business can improve themselves.
‘‘One person cannot push for development and be successful. And so we will involve all actors and deliberately pursue partnership drive with committed individuals and other cooperate organizations to push the development agenda in Obuasi,’’ – he concluded.
