The National Democratic Congress (NDC) held its parliamentary and presidential primaries on Saturday, with Faustilove Appiah Kannin emerging victorious in the Obuasi West constituency.
Faustilove, who was the parliamentary candidate for the NDC in the 2020 elections, defeated her closest rival, Ambrose Edwin Nsarkoh, a Human Resource practitioner, with 605 votes against 468, with three rejected ballots. The total number of delegates expected to participate in the primaries was 1246 but total votes cast was 1056.
The announcement of the results was made by the Electoral Commission officer, Mr Thomas Biyimba, the Obuasi Municipal electoral officer. In her victory speech, Faustilove expressed her appreciation for the trust reposed in her by the delegates, thanking them for electing her once again.
Faustilove had previously contested in the 2020 elections, replacing former Ashanti regional minister, Alexander Kobina Ackon, who was the parliamentary candidate in 2016. She lost to the MP for Obuasi West, Hon. Kwaku Kwarteng. Her victory in the primaris is a testament to the confidence the party has in her ability to represent the Obuasi West constituency effectively.
In addition to the parliamentary primaries, the NDC also held its presidential primaries on the same day. Former President John Mahama emerged victorious with 1053 votes, while Kojo Bonsu obtained eight votes. Dr Kwabena Duffour, a former Bank of Ghana governor, withdrew from the race a day before the elections. The number of rejected ballots was 15, with the total votes cast being 1056.
