The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has confirmed a fire outbreak at its Obuasi Substation in the Ashanti Region, leading to an unexpected power supply interruption across Obuasi Township and surrounding communities.
According to a press release issued by GRIDCo’s Corporate Communications office, the fire was reported at approximately 9:12 PM on Wednesday, May 21, 2025. Upon detection, GRIDCo staff immediately disconnected power from the station to ensure safety, and firefighters from AngloGold Ashanti promptly intervened to extinguish the blaze.

GRIDCo’s engineering team is currently conducting thorough equipment integrity checks at the substation. These checks are necessary to ascertain the safety and functionality of the affected infrastructure before power can be restored to the impacted areas.
“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused by this incident and assure our valued customers that efforts are being made to address the issue and restore supply as soon as possible,” said Dzifa Bampoh, Manager of the Corporate Communications Section at GRIDCo.
The company has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the reliability of Ghana’s National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS), which it operates. Since becoming operational in August 2008, GRIDCo has served as a key player in the transmission of electricity from wholesale suppliers, including the Volta River Authority (VRA), to 33 bulk customers and distribution utilities across Ghana and West Africa.
