Obuasi Assembly Targets 90% Potable Water Coverage by 2029 Through Partnerships

The Obuasi Municipal Assembly has set an ambitious target to expand potable water coverage from the current 70% to 90% by 2029, aiming to ensure safe and reliable water for both domestic and industrial use.

The Assembly plans to conduct a comprehensive assessment of water supply and distribution systems across the municipality. Based on the findings, strategic partnerships will be pursued with organizations such as Safe Water Network, which will help establish and operate safe water enterprises. These enterprises are expected to treat and distribute potable water through water stations and household pipe connections.

In addition, the Assembly intends to facilitate the provision of mechanised boreholes in basic schools, health facilities, and other public institutions, particularly in underserved communities. These interventions are designed to improve access to safe water, enhance public health outcomes, and raise the overall quality of life for residents.

Hon. Faustilove Appiah Kannin, Municipal Chief Executive, emphasized the importance of partnerships and innovation in achieving the target.

“Our goal is clear: by 2029, nine out of every ten residents in Obuasi should have access to potable water. We will achieve this through partnerships, innovation, and community-focused interventions,” Hon. Appiah Kannin told Assembly Members during the First Ordinary Meeting of the Third Session of the Eighth Assembly, held on 2nd and 3rd June 2026 at the Old Assembly Conference Hall, Antobuasi.

This initiative forms part of the Assembly’s broader agenda to improve sanitation, reduce waterborne diseases, and strengthen infrastructure for sustainable development in Obuasi.
